Engage help kids play their own local derbies

Engage Communities hosted a free five-a-side football tournament on Saturday 22nd February 2014 at The Co-operative Academy of Stoke on Trent. The tournament had more than 130 young people participating in the football tournament and also helping as volunteers. Winners of the 2 age categories were given free tickets to the Port Vale v Crewe game. Port Vale also donated trophies to all the winning team members. The local Police, national charity StreetGames & the Police and Crime Commissioner for Staffordshire also supported the event organised by Engage Communities.  Yaser Mir, founder of Engage Communities, said: “This wasn’t for teams who are already established. We wanted to give kids an opportunity who might not always play. The main aim is to keep kids off the streets. We wore them out playing football instead.” Congratulations to the winning teams both from the Shelton area of Stoke-on-Trent:

Age 11 – 13
Winners: Shelton United
Runners-up: Etruria FC

Age 14-16
Winners: Shelton Young’Unz
Runners-up: Cobridge Certified

We must highlight the talented football team Shelton Young’unz have consecutively won every Engage Communities tournament that they’ve entered. Therefore they will now play in a regional tournament in the West Midlands, with the potential to play at St. George’s Park in a National Final and the opportunity to win a trip to European Street Soccer Cup.
